玛丽和马克思 英文信笺 赏析（一）

笔友关系从1976年维持到1994年，期间各自经历了许多人生起伏，直到成年的玛丽（托妮·科莱特 Toni Collette 配音）终于来到纽约看望马克思……看了这个关于笔友间友情的电影。感触颇多。毕竟，这种简单的动画，了了的情节，便勾画出了人间的友情，亲情，爱情，死亡，孤独，迷茫，愤怒。每个人都有自己的故事，或哀伤或搞笑，每个人的人生都不完美，有力和无力地挣扎着。虽然是两个国家，两个忘年的笔友的通信，但是觉得好像在说自己，在说世上的每一个人。

这封信是小Mary写给素不相识的Max的第一封信。信的主要内容是介绍自己的情况，爱好，也顺便提到了他的家庭--- 母亲和父亲。最后是一些自己作为小孩子的一些有趣的问题。最后，Mary还画了一张自己的肖像画，甚至还把自己准备要吃的Cherry Ripe这个牌子的巧克力邮寄给了自己的网友。
Based on a real story。笔者认为个故事的编剧一定非常了解“笔友”。因为小Mary的第一封信基本上涉及到了很多笔友知识，如简单的自我介绍，周围的情况，提出一些问题给网友来使通讯变得有趣，富有童心得画自己的肖像画，邮寄好吃的东西给远在美国的笔友等等。这些都是我们在“笔友”通讯中可以借鉴的。
接下来我们来分析下英文：
Dear Mr M Horowitz, （称谓）
My name is Mary Daisy Dinkle and I am 8 years old,3 months and 9 days. My favourite colour is brown and my favourite food is sweetened condensed milk, followed closely by chocolate. I have a rooster called Ethel that looks like this. He doesn’t lay eggs but will one day.
My mother likes smoking, crickets and sherry, and my father likes playing in his shed with dead birds.
【点评】1. Mary Daisy Dinkle：这个是Mary的全名。其中Dinkle是姓，Mary是名字。国外一般熟人之间喊名字，所以我们把电影叫做Mary and Max而不是Dinkle and Horozitz。
2． I am 8 years old, 3 months and 9 days：很有趣的计算和叙述，这里可以更体现Mary小孩子的“认真”。这里要提的是，如果有连字符（hyphen），我们就要写成 Mary is a 8-year-old, 3-month and 9-day old girl。
3. Sweetened Condensed Milk：这种饮料是Mary 和 Max共同爱好的，影片最后一段Max也有提到，希望这个孤独的世界有人会和他分享一瓶“condensed milk”。那么，这个是什么呢？插播一条科普知识：
在牛奶中加入 40% 至 45% 的糖含量，再经加热蒸发掉约 60% 的水含量后，即为炼乳，因为所得的浓稠乳液稠而甜，英文也称为 Condensed Milk 或 Sweetened Condensed Milk，而一般英文中指的不带甜味的 Unsweetened Condensed Milk 指的是则是淡奶。
4。 Rooster：公鸡。有的同学可能会大声问，怎么不说“cock”呢？不好意思，在英文中“cock”现在比较常用于“小鸡鸡”的意思。囧。所以同学们注意别把Coke和Cock的音发错了。以前的一位比较清纯的女同事就经常用英文说“I like cock”，我更愿相信她应该是发音有问题。
5．In his shed and play with dead birds：shed指车棚，小屋。Play with dead birds：指收集鸟类标本。
我们来继续分析下一段：
Where do babies come from in America? Do they come from cola cans? In Australia they are found in the beer glasses.

【点评】1. Where do babies come from in America? 小孩在美国是怎么生出来的？Mary做为小孩子，对这些事情很好奇而全球的家长好像都在欺骗下一代。站长记得偶小时的邻居对偶说，小孩是从“腋窝”生出来的。
2．It would be great if 。。。这句话不但在“笔友”交流中“委婉要求回信”常用，其实在英文的日常会话中也很常用，中文翻译来是“如果。。。就太好了”，但是结构不是 XXX is great而是说It would be great if 。。。，重点在后面的句子。
3．Yours sincerealy：Sincerely 是Mary 写错了（mis-spelt）了。这种错误可能是因为Mary想表示“真诚”这个词sincere+really；
