笔友间友谊”的，意味深长的《玛丽和马克思》(Mary and Max 2009)。 站长大人会努力尝试以英文学习的角度分析下，两位笔友历经20多年的一些信笺，同时贯穿下故事情节。以下这封信是Max在接到远在澳大利亚的女孩Mary写的回信。大家应该还记得情节，患有自闭症的Max是在读了信笺4篇以后，凝望着窗户18个小时猛然做的决定，决定回信！这也是他第一次，也许是其一生中唯一一次向这个孤独和格格不入，令他迷惑的世界发出交流的信号。影片把这种强烈的悸动，孤独痛苦和交流的想往交织挣扎，表现得淋漓尽致。
我喜欢Max打字的节奏，伴随着欢快音乐，他文思泉涌，快乐异常，44年的故事，辛酸迷惑歧视伤感泪水欢笑，仿佛在一瞬间在脑海浮现，涌到笔端，落于纸上。
太多要说的。还是先来看看这封信的原文吧：
(The first letter from Max)
Dear Mary Daisy Dinkle,
Thank you for the letter, which I opened and read at 9.17 pm after my overeater’s anonymous class. I am trying to lose weight because my psychiatrist, Dr Barnard Hazelhof, says a healthy body equals a healthy mind. He says my mind is not that healthy.
Your drawing is an interesting visual portrayal of yourself. I have never met anyone from Australia.
Firstly, I will answer your question. Unfortunately, in America, babies are not found in cola cans. I asked my mother when I was 4 and she said they came from eggs laid by rabbies. If you aren’t jewish, they’re laid by catholic nuns. If you’re an atheist, they're laid by dirty, lonely prostitutes. So this is where babies come from in America.
【点评】1。 Thank you for the letter：这句话应该也是广大“笔友”爱好者应该记得的，每次收到信，写回信的时候都要感谢对方的回信哦。当然，对于Max这种封闭的人来，有来自远方的信笺，感觉到被关怀被注意，应该比一般人更感激，更需要。
2． Have never met anyone …：这里是英文中常用的结构，have never DONE something。从来没有做过某事情。注意DONE是完成时，e.g. I have never heard of it！我从来没有听说过这回事。
3． My mind is not that healthy：这里是指心理医生Dr. Hazelhof说Max思想有问题，平常说的“脑子有问题”。不过一般在英文中，如果你形容某人，不推荐用这个。一般 “his mind is not healthy”是指他的思想“不健康”，暗指的意思和中文的意思一样。
4． They’re laid by dirty, lonely prostitutes：这段是Max来回答Mary的问题。虽然是大人唬小孩子的话（小时候的Max被大人告知），其实反映了一些人们的偏见固执以及社会的某些宗教色彩。Max是以一种平静的口吻诉说的，其实却是一种大智慧。真正的讽刺夹杂其中。Catholic是“天主教”，其实Max的妈妈代表社会中极端保守的宗教正统人士，他们认为“没有信仰”的人是可耻的。是“杂种”。当然，Max的一身充满了矛盾和挣扎，最后他自己也是不信仰的。带了个犹太的帽子（Jewish cap）只是为了保暖。
5． Be laid by ：是由。。。产下的。E.g. those eggs are laid by chicken.
接下来是下部分：
I share my home with a fish, some snails, whom I have named after famous scientists, a parakeet called Mr Biscuit and, finally a cat called Hal. ’Hal’ is an abbreviation for halitosis, from which he suffers. He followed me home after a gang of children shot his eye out with a beebee gun. Do you have a pet kangaroo?
When I was born, my father left my mother and me on a kibbutz. She shot herself with my uncle’s gun when I was 6.
Do you like chocolate hotdogs? I invented the recipe for them and can send it to you.
When I was young, I invented an invisible friend called Mr Ravioli. My psychiatrist says I don’t need him anymore. So he just sits in the corner and reads.
Last week I picked up 128 cigarette butts. Peoples are always littering in New York. I do not understand why people break laws. Butts are bad because they wash out to the sea and fish smoke them and become nicotine dependent. I am just joking because, of course, it is impossible for a cigarette to remain lit underwater. Also, fish do not have pockets to keep cigarette lighters in.
I am 44years old and have 8 tracksuits the same colour and size. I weigh 352 pounds and an as tall as a 6-foot tree.
【点评】1。 Share with：和。。。分享。我们现在常说的“培训分享”也可以叫做sharing。E.g. I share my dorm with my roomies；我和室友合住宿舍。这里Max将一些自己的宠物，和家里的一些“生物”当做是自己的朋友，所以才会用到share。想必不会有同学说自己“share room with cockroach”。虽然，事实上一般是这样。
2．Halitosis：口臭。Parakeet：长尾鹦鹉。这次叫“臭臭”的猫，也是这个残酷无情世界的牺牲品。“在被一群小痞子用玩具枪打瞎了眼睛，跟着我来到了家里”。各位可以想象，这个灰色影片里的故事先后远离我们的角色。走的都挺哀伤，故事虽然奇特但是又在情理之中。“人生如过客”。至于这只猫，套用现代时髦的话，也是个“杯具”。
3． When I was born：在英文中，一般说到回忆的事情。喜欢用这个句型，“when I was young。。。想当年我。。。”有句话是这样说的，I wasn’t born yesterday，字面上的意思是“我不是昨天才生出来的”，其实是说“别蒙我了，你当我是SB啊？”Max悲惨的人生，他幼时的家庭只是一个开始。
4．I invented an invisible friend called Mr Ravioli：invented是发明，这个地方是杜撰。其实说的这位Mr. Ravioli只是虚幻的一个人物，因为Max有自闭症，这个人物只在他脑中存在，是他排解孤独的“伙伴”。
5． Litter：扔垃圾。禁止乱扔垃圾：No Littering。Break law：触犯法律。Break可以有很多搭配，break records（打破记录）, break one’s heart（伤了某人的心）, break one’s promise（食言）, give me a break (拜托，让我歇歇吧)。
6．nicotine dependent：尼古丁上瘾。Dependent是依赖的意思，不依赖或者是独立，叫做independent。
7. be joking：开玩笑。也叫kidding。Tracksuits：田径运动服。Remain：保持。后面接形容词作表语。例如：①We must always remain modest and prudent．我们必须经常保持谦虚、谨慎。
