Max的回信（回忆工作经历）
今天我们继续来分析英文动画片《玛丽和马克思》中的经典信笺。

I have had many different jobs during my life. My first job was collecting subway tokens in the subway. My second job was at Yiddel’s Gourmet Kosher Supplies where I worked at the machine that made pre-packaged noodle kugels.
I was born Jewish and used to believe in God but I have since read many books that have proven God is a figment of my imagination. People like to believe in
God because it answers complicated questions like where did the universe come from, do worms go to heaven, and why do old ladies have blue hair. Even though I’m an atheist, I still wore my yamulke as it keeps my brain warm.
My third job was for a company that printed logos on novelty items. I worked at the frisbee printing machine. A frisbee is a circular plastic disc that people throw at each other. It is like a boomerang but it dose not come back.
【点评】1. Lottery：['lɔtəri] 彩票。Enjoy + doing表示喜爱做某事。这段话写的是Max买同一组号码坚持买了9年，每期都是一个号码。影片中Max在向Mary读着自己的号码，背景是电视机中的声音，宣布的号码--- 竟然一个都不沾。不能不说非常戏剧而又现实。
2． I have had many different jobs during my life。Have had表示过去完成时，意思是“我之前做过好多工作”，语法上表示“过去已经完成的，即现在没有在做的事情”。Token纪念币。搜集纪念币或者邮票，在英文中我们用特定的词 --- collect；收税也是。
3．Jewish犹太人。说到纽约，据说四分之一的常驻居民都是犹太人。Yamulke犹太压发帽[男用]；used to believe，如果用used to，就说明“以前曾经做。。。”，言下之意是现在已经不做这个事情了。
4．novelty items：新鲜，新奇的小玩意。和widget相似，但是比较书面的说法，因为涉及到Max之前的工作经历。像后面讲到的，garbage collector 站长认为都是比较文雅的说法，其实莫过于我们常说的“捡垃圾的”，“流浪汉”。这又让我想到发达国家异常精细的分工和协作。
5．Frisbee：n. 飞盘(塑料玩具)；boomerang: n. 自食其果的行为，回飞镖
e.g. His attempt to discredit his opponent boomeranged (on him) when he was charged with libel.
他企图败坏对手名声反而自食其果，被控以诽谤罪。
Max向Mary解释Frisbee和Boomerang了两者的区别，Frisbee是人们扔来扔去来玩的飞碟，但是它不回回旋。
6. It’s like 。。。好像。。。一样；这句话虽然非常简单，但是绝对可以说是日常英文口语交流中用到最多的一组词，尝尝会听见老外在形容一些事情的时候说到。It’s like 。。。然后卡到这里，运用非常夸张的表情或者手势，声音来表现。
如果你来形容你邂逅的某个mm而你又不得不用英文的时候，你可以说“She’s so beautiful, so stunning, and I was … .it’s like I flying high,…feels like in heavens”;
接下来是Max叙述他的第四份工作：
My fourth job was when I was called up for jury duty. I didn’t get paid much but got free cookies and coffee. Jurors are outstanding members of the community who haven’t murdered anybody. I was made to the shortlist of a trail where a man killed all his friends at his own surprise birthday party. Unfortunately, I didn’t get elected because they found out I’d been a mental patient at one point.
【点评】1。 Fourth job：第四份工作。序数词，大家一起想想：first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth；
2．Jurors are outstanding members of the community who haven’t murdered anybody; 这句话是极其具有粉刺意味的话。从Max这个有点颠颠，糊涂的角色严肃得说出来更有意思。“陪审员是社区的一些精英，他们从来没有/还没有杀人的记录”；换句话说，也好不到哪去。
3．Get elected：被选举。Mental patient精神病人。这里可不是“神经病”，据说这两个东西不一样。所以大家下次喊人的时候，要注意分清楚类别。Mental disorder精神错乱。相当于crazy，但是又感觉比crazy要严重的样子。E.g. He has gone mental。他真的疯了。
