a. I learned your name from the web site XXX and would like to make friends with you if you feel the same.
b. Glad to have received your email. I enjoyed reading your letter very much. This is my first time writing to a friend outside the country and I hope that you and I can get to know more about each other through email.
c. This is really an exciting experience writing to you. I would love to tell you more about myself.
I am a seventeen-year-old girl studying at Tai-Shan Senior High. I do a lot of studying every weekday for the big exam I have to pass for college. But I do love to write. I write diary every other day, and draw pictures next to my writing. There are usually more things to write in two days than in one day. On weekends, I make bracelets with beautiful beads and give them to my friends as a gift. They all love it and also try to make rings, bracelets, and chains, etc. Now it’s a fashion in my school!
My parents both work and I also got a brother studying at a junior high school near our home. A family of four is quite typical in Taiwan. My father is an electronic engineer working for an LCD monitor company, and my mom works in a business office as a secretary. My brother is a lot younger than me, but he and I can play together. We play basketball together on weekends. We also play video games and he always defeats me.
The whole family doesn’t seem to get together very often because we are all very busy during the weekdays. My mom cooks sometimes but more often she would pick up some takeouts on her way home from work. My dad often comes home later than 8:00 p.m. and has his late dinner. By then, he would be just too tired to talk much; only watching sports on T.V. We kids are also busy studying and do not need to talk to him or bother him with anything.
On weekends, the family does get together a lot and go outing very often. If not, my dad and I would have a heavy fight with the video games. I win most of the time, but sometimes he wins. That’s cool, right? Three of us often make bets on who wins the games. Sometimes the bets can go on for two weeks so that there would be enough games to get the points.
My best friend in school is Lee-hwa. She has been my friend since our first year in senior high. We study together and go shopping at the little store near our school. We both love the little things there. You know, beads and cuties. Sometimes, we go to a teahouse on our way home and have a bubbled black tea after the tiring lessons in school. All the teas offered there are jumbo sizes in large beautiful brandy glasses. We can sip the tea and talk for almost an hour and then go home. You know what? We planned to go to the same college TOGETHER!
The town I live in is a busy one named Hsin-Chuan where there are a lot of stores around my home. A 7-11 store is right at the first floor of out apartment building. If I feel hungry I can just go down stairs and get a pack of instant noodles from the store. The store has a 24-hour service. Other stores in this neighborhood open till ten or eleven at night.
The weather here is hot and humid, I sweat a lot in summer and it is not always cold in winter. We don’t have snow is the city but there is a little snow in the mountains. If there is snow, hundreds of people would all swarm in the mountains and take a lot of pictures there. I have not seen snow because I do not have the time to go. I am always studying.
I live in Tai-Nan at the southern part of Taiwan. The weather here is nice and warm all the time. Sunshine is everywhere even in winter. I ride bicycle to school and most of my classmates do. It takes about half an hour to get to my school. Even though this is a large city it is not as crowded as Taipei. How about your hometown?
I studied at Tai-Shan Senior High School. We study almost from the morning till the end of the day. Really! We have a lot of pressure from the big exam to enter college. The juniors in my school even go to school on Saturdays. Do you have the similar pressure?
Well, I do get to relax on weekends. My family sometimes go out to the country and enjoy a nice day together. My Dad thought I should just relax and forget about school, and my Mom said I looked pale and should come out to have some suntan. But I only worry about the many lessons I have not finished studying. How can I explain to them that I need more, more, and more time to study?
There is a vender come near the school every day who sell extra large egg pan cakes at the price of a medium size. I often get one in the morning for breakfast and munch on before my classes begin. Wow! It has surely won my heart. A lot of the students in my school begin their school day with this egg pan cake and feel happy and content the whole day. We all praise on his pan cakes every day and the old vender seems very happy. He never misses the morning shift even on a rainy day.
There are a lot of ice and drink shops near my school. My classmate and I often go get some cold drinks or ice plates after school. Ice plate has all kinds of sweet beans on shaved ice. It is especially thirst-quenching in the hot summer here. Some girls love to get Pearl Milk Tea, which is milk tea with little brown chewy starchy balls in. Almost all the girls love to chew the balls. But I do not like this tea that much; what I like most is lemon tea.
A friend of mine gave me a beautiful bracelet of colorful beads as a birthday present. She made it herself. I love it very much and always wear it to school. It adds color to my boring uniform which I have to wear from Monday through Friday. On weekends I found it matches the color of all my outfits with its variety of colors. My friend is also very happy to see me always wearing it. I am sure we are going to be good friends always.
We had an athletic meeting this past week for the celebration of our school anniversary. I was in the rally of 4000 meters and the team members often stay after school for training. We had more time together running and chatting during the breaks and got to know more about one another. We were the third runner up at end of the race but we all felt very content to have many more good buddies than before the training.
My mother told me that I should study English more so that I could go to a summer camp at my uncle’s hometown in Canada. I got so excited that I could go and spent the summer with my uncle’s family. We are very close when he came back to Taiwan and he often invited to visit him some time. Now it is true that I am going to Canada. I now write to him through email almost every day and he sent me the program of the camp and the things I should prepare before I go. Studying English a lot harder is of course the most important thing I should do now.
SARS has greatly affected Taiwan recently. Hospitals and people
Are quarantined for infection of SARS virus and some people
Became severely traumatized physically and mentally. We also
have to check on our temperature even before we get in school.
Now things are quite under control but we are still taking
precautions to prevent infection of SARS.
I am taking good care of my personal hygiene and found my classmates are all very careful in this matter. There are things in the world that requires teamwork; no one can be just an onlooker. Every thing and every one affects one another. It takes the effort of many people to accomplish one big job. You cannot be too selfish and you cannot be too self-centered. You also have to watch out for everyone’s safety. Don't things in the community like crime, public sanitation, and earth care all apply to the same rule?
